Travel and Tourism in Sierra Leone is a Hot Topic!

Author: Rajni Khanna

Source: articlerich.com

Until a few days ago, if you had asked me to tell you about Sierra Leone, I would have had to think long and hard to tell you much about this West African country. I could probably have explained roughly where the country is located. I may have mentioned something about the slave trade being connected to Sierra Leone. I could certainly have told you that they had experienced a brutal civil war. I might even have admitted that I wasn't entirely sure whether the war was 100% over. And that's about it.

Slavery and war. A pretty negative view of what is in fact an exceptionally positive country. Today, I see Sierra Leone from an entirely different perspective.

It is difficult to ignore Sierra Leone's history and focus purely on the present. Once a fertile area inhabited by dozens of tribes, it was settled by the Portuguese in the 1400's who built a fort as a trading post for gold, spices, ivory and slaves. A British protectorate in later years, Sierra Leone had the dubious honor of becoming home to more than 40,000 freed slaves who gave Freetown its name. As a protectorate, Sierra Leone was exploited for its mineral and diamond wealth in the 1900's and Sierra Leonean's fought against the Germans in Cameroon in the First World War, and alongside the British in the Second World War. In 1961, Sierra Leone achieved independence from Britain and governed itself peacefully for 30 years. The peace was not to last and was followed by a decade of brutal civil war that destroyed the economy, brutalized the people and left a country that is rich in resources as one of the poorest in the world.

The, africa travel tips advice , conflict was officially declared over in January 2002, and President Kasbah reelected in May 2002. Since then, the people of Sierra Leone have been pulling together to repair, renew and regenerate.

Whilst doing research for a new website looking at travel, africa travel tips advice , and tourism in Sierra Leone, I came into contact with Sierra Leoneans from all manner of backgrounds living in both Sierra Leone and elsewhere. Their passion for the country was infectious: they clearly wanted to get the message across that Sierra Leone has far more to offer than a sad recent history and that reconstruction is moving ahead at a rapid pace. And indeed, proof of reconstruction is everywhere - new roads are being built, mines are, africa travel tips advice , being re-opened, dam projects started before the war are once again underway, markets are once again thriving and humming with life. There is also a great deal of confidence in Sierra Leone's potential as a tourist destination: a Chinese company has recently invested a reputed US$270 million in the hotel infrastructure; enterprising companies like Kevin McPhillips Travel (based in the UK, USA and the Netherlands) offer exclusive twice weekly flights to Sierra Leone; African Tour specialists are researching viable package holidays in the region. The exciting thing about investment in Sierra Leone is that more is set to follow!

They have a right to be confident. The beaches along Sierra Leone's golden peninsula are said to be one of the world's best kept secrets. Secluded, clean and stretching for miles on end, beach tourism is one of the top items on the government's tourism promotion agenda. Beaches with very British names like Kent, Lumley, Sussex and York mix with more African names like Bureh Town, Tokey and Mammah beach, and

Although many of the, africa travel tips advice , forests and much of the wildlife has been disturbed and in some cases, destroyed, by the war, eco-tourism is an important focus of Sierra Leoneans and natural treasures like Outamba-Kilimi National Park, populated by game animals such as elephants, chimpanzees and pigmy hippos, and Mount Bintimani, the highest point in West Africa, are just two of the worthwhile wildlife attractions on offer. Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, africa travel tips advice , rescues orphaned and captured chimps and has been described as one of the most successful Sierra Leonean wildlife endeavours, whilst Tiwai Island is home to over, africa travel tips advice , 3000 chimps as well as other game.

Lakes, rivers and dams are perfect for picnics and relaxing. The marshlands hide a myriad of colourful birds - indeed, the bird life has been less affected by the war than the animals, and everywhere you go, the air is filled with birdsong. Sierra Leone is a bird-watchers dream! Tiwai Island for one boasts over 135 different bird species!

For culture vultures and those with historical interests, the remnants of the slave trade make interesting and though-provoking expeditions. Bunce Island, a slave trading fortress, is a brief boat trip up the river; Freetown is itself a monument to freed slaves and its Cotton Tree, which stands in the heart of what is thought to be an old slave, africa, africa travel tips advice , travel tips advice , market, is now an impressive national symbol. Graves, monuments and forts are all that remain of British and Portuguese power in Sierra Leone: each has a tale to tell. There are over 16 different ethnic groups in the country, including the Krio, descendents of freed slaves who speak an English-based Creole called Krio, and visiting villages and chatting to people in markets and in the streets is rewarding for all parties!

Freetown is probably the most developed of the cities, offering a level of safety that is difficult to match even in Western, africa travel tips advice , countries. Hotels, restaurants and nightspots are sprouting like mushrooms, and eating out in Sierra Leone promises a range of traditional and international treats, and seafood that is beyond belief!

One has to wonder what attraction will tip the scales in making Sierra Leone the popular destination that it once was before the civil war. Based on my experiences with Sierra Leoneans in recent weeks, I feel that it will be the people who make the difference. Without exception, every Sierra Leonean that I have met or worked with has been proud of their country, proud of its progress and excited about the future. They are unfailingly welcoming, greeting aid-workers and travellers alike with smiles that you can only find in Africa, with an optimism - no, positivity - that other countries would do well to emulate.

For travellers in search of a "diamond in the rough", Sierra Leone offers a holiday like no other - my only advice to you is to visit sooner rather than later, to avoid what is sure to be a stampede once holiday-makers and tour operators latch, africa travel tips advice , on to this gem of a destination.

Planning Your First Cruise

Author: Smith Chen

Source: articledashboard.com

Planning your first holiday especially on a cruise liner is always a challenge. You could get together with your family and friends and discuss your travel and vacation plans so as to get a better idea of what needs to be done. The best way is to book with a travel agent who will not only advice you on which cruise liner and destination you should be going to but also plan your entire itinerary including air travel to the port of embarkation. But before you proceed, let's first answer some questions that are bound to pop up while planning your cruise.

What kind of cruise is suitable for your age group?

Typically, there are different kinds of cruises suitable for different age groups. You will find a cruise designed for all individuals, from the toddler to the teen to the retired. All you need to decide in who is going and then select the cruise best suited for you. There are fun-filled holiday cruises for the family,, advice alaska travel , singles, newly-weds, advice alaska travel , and even for the slightly older and matured.

What kind of budget are you on?

Typically, the minimum cost of per person per day is about, advice alaska travel , $100 on an average cruise liner. Many ships charge extra for certain items and of course air-fare is not included in this. You can decrease the cost somewhat by sharing the cabin with another person, booking way in advance, like almost six months prior, or taking a risk and booking late, less than two months prior to, advice alaska travel , departure.

How many days can you spend on your cruise?

If you have less than a week, then the options would be closer to home and restricted to Mexico, Bahamas or simply a weekend cruise to a port in the ocean and back. A complete week gives you more time and options range from the Caribbean, Europe, Hawaii, Alaska and even the South Pacific, depending on of course your current residential location. Anything longer than that would be suitable for any kind of cruise vacation across the globe.

When would you be most likely to travel?

Obviously, cruise tickets are cheaper in leaner times like spring or fall and most expensive during the summer holidays, advice alaska travel , . Winter is also considered high season when travelling to warmer locations like the Caribbean. Some locations like Alaska, Scandinavia and the Baltic have a shorter cruising season and will be open only between May and September. While Antarctic cruises are on between November and February, Mediterranean cruises can be taken all year round.

Where would you like to go?

With the earth being covered with 75% ocean, cruise ships today can reach any of the continents and traverse all across the globe. From the Americas to Austral-Asia, Africa to Antarctica, Bahamas to Bermuda, Europe to Canada, there are plenty of cruise destinations to choose from. Even land locked locations such as central Europe, Russia, or the Yangtze River in China can be reached on a river cruise. Always a challenge to decide your destination, it is important to keep all other factors like type of cruise, budget, length of vacation among others in mind.

What are your interests?

Although cruises provide all kinds of on board activities, your destination should be based on your interest. While European tours offer a good dose of culture for the history buffs, tropical destinations like the Caribbean and the South Pacific, advice alaska travel , are for the beach, advice alaska travel , lovers. Whether it is glacier watching in Alaska, deep sea diving in Australia or experiencing the fjords in Norway, you have to decide what you like to do best before you choose your cruise destination. Many cruises also offer a list of off-shore activities before you book, so make sure that you are well researched on that as well.

What kind of accommodation would you prefer?

Cabin selection typically depends on what your budget is. Sea view cabins are obviously more expensive than the lower deck ones. Also, if you are travelling to scenic places like Alaska or Scandinavia it would be preferable to have a view. Deck plans are available in hard copy, so make your decision after doing your homework and, advice alaska travel , planning your budget.

What are your dress styles and, advice alaska travel , eating habits?

In a move away from only formal wear, most cruise ships today are more relaxed and have only one or two nights of dress-up nights. The rest of the time, it is usually casual or country club style dressing. Typically there are two seating arrangements for dinner, one starting at 6:30pm and the other starting at 9:00pm. While early seating allows you plenty of time for late shows, it may rush your off shore excursions. Late seating on the other hand gives you time to relax but may hamper your late evening activities. Also, table seating is usually for four to eight persons and very rarely, advice alaska travel , for two. If you do want a dinner for the twosome, you will have to make a prior request.

How do you get to the cruise ship?

Flying there or driving down if its close by are two of the most preferred options. Sometimes the cruise lines offer you a fly-cruise package, which is easier, but may be a trifle expensive than independent booking. These include transfers between, advice alaska travel , the ship and the airport, which can again add up to the cost.

What are the documents needed?

Cruise vouchers and travel itineraries should typically reach you 2-3 weeks prior to your departure. Travel insurance is not mandatory but strongly advised as a carry along document in case of any mishaps. Passports are needed for all international destinations.

Canal Cruising in France

Author: Don E Johnson

Source: ezinearticles.com

A canal cruise can be a truly personal and uplifting experience. Have you ever imagined spending quiet time watching a beautiful and unique countryside slowly drift by? How about adding gourmet meals prepared by your personal chef? How about getting off your barge, exploring a village, ireland travel advice , - or a village meal - and meeting up with your ship at the next lock?

Cruising on a canal hotel barge adds the opportunity to enjoy the essence of small village culture and cuisine - not to mention the chance to visit many history-laden cities.

How about just simply "getting away from it all" for a few days? A canal cruise offers all this - and more.

There are literally hundreds of small boat operators with their own web sites - as well as agencies specially concerned with handling canal cruises. Many of these sites offer excellent advice and information and I won't pretend, ireland travel advice , to surpass their knowledge., ireland travel advice , I'll simply provide the names of several.

France is the champion when it comes to barge cruises, with England a close second behind. France has about 5300 miles of canals for cruising and England is approaching 2500 miles.

Canal barges were the main freight haulers before the decline of that industry caused by the building of railroads. Many have been converted into really superbly outfitted floating hotels. The newer models were built specifically for luxury passenger usage.

These hotel barges usually carry from 4 to 20 passengers, with one carrying, ireland travel advice , 50 people - or you can simply lease the, ireland travel advice , entire boat to yourself, if you can afford it.

The barges in France are usually around 35 feet wide and 130 feet long. The locks determine the ultimate size of the vessels. They come fully crewed, almost to a fault, and every amenity is provided. All this, of course, comes with the price. Even all you can drink.

In France, (and England and Ireland as well) it's possible to rent cabin cruisers (small yachts) for a do it yourself voyage. These boats can sleep from 2 to 10 passengers. In France, there are also boats called Penichettes, which look like miniature hotel barges, but fully manned and crewed by YOU.

If a quiet and relaxing cruise though a French canal on a barge "hotel" suits your fancy, there are many sites to choose from.

Aberchrombie and Kent, Afloat in France, Barges Throughout Europe,, ireland travel advice , Circa Cruises, ewaterways, French Country Barges, le boat, Locaboat Holidays, Locaboat Penichettes, and Travel Points, are among many that have information on barging through the quiet, pleasant, and scenic canals of the French countryside.

Keep Cruising and Keep Traveling - It is Safe

Author: Sid Kaplan

Source: articleage.com

In the time that has followed since the tragic events of September 11, we have seen numerous changes happening to us all.
These changes began with shock, disbelief and anguish and so overwhelmed us, that they made all work related issues seem trivial and, expert travel advice , personal relationship, expert travel advice , seem especially dear. And believe me, this hits very close to home with a wife who works in the cruise industry in the United States.
Those of us in the travel business began to see numerous cancellations of long planned holidays, expert travel advice , and vacations, mostly from fear and misunderstanding of security, schedule changes even with the combined will and effort of the cruise industry attempting to keep passengers traveling and enjoying the process.
Should you take a vacation? Should you travel? I think we North Americans pride ourselves on our freedom to travel and enrich our lives by interacting with cultures from all over. To cocoon and avoid travel allows those who seek to destroy our freedoms the power to bring us to our knees.
I believe that America will not stop travelling, it is in our blood. The key is to increase your knowledge of travel related, expert travel advice , issues and to understand how the process has changed. What follows is a synopsis of the changes you can expect to see for the near and distant future.
What can I expect at the airport? There are stricter security measures on airport employees, merchants, airline employees, and vendors that service the airports…and also on travelers. Expect the line that you are standing in to take longer than before. Plan for longer time at the airport to park, check-in, and get to departing gate. You may also experience some inconveniences and delays - please be patient.
There will be thorough searches of all airports and airplanes before passengers are allowed to enter the aircraft. You will be required to limit carry on baggage and to possess government issued photo identification, and as always, I strongly urge you to obtain a passport as the most important piece of identification. You may also notice additional uniformed law enforcement officers and canine teams patrolling airports - all to guarantee your safety.
What changes will you see regarding your cruise experience? Embark and Disembark may take longer due to additional security measures. Strict enforcement of required identification and nationality/travel papers. Boarding will be denied without presenting proper documents. Your documents must be original - no copies will be allowed.
Here are the Top Ten Cruise Traveler Tips
1. Purchase trip/vacation, expert travel advice , interruption insurance. Check with your travel agent as to the coverage benefits and limitations.

2. Review your cruise documents in advance for important guidelines and travel tips. Again check with knowledgeable cruise agents to ensure you are well prepared.

3. Prior to leaving home, call the airline - or check their website for flight arrival and departure information

4. Be at the airport early - 2 hours or more unless local circumstances dictate allowing a longer time. Security screenings will take additional time.

5. Minimize carry-on luggage OR be prepared to have them searched and suspicious items confiscated (nail files, scissors/clippers etc.) Please make sure luggage is clearly tagged with the complete color bag-tags provided with your documents.

6. Make sure necessary medical items are with you rather than in checked luggage.

7. Make sure you have your passport and other identification on your person - not in checked baggage. 8. Lower the stress level of "getting to the ship on-time" by arranging a pre-cruise land package. Consider coming in a day early - especially when flying a long distance to the cruise.

9. Expect delays and longer lines than usual - and be pleasantly surprised if they are not that bad.

10. Be patient - once on board your cruise, you will have the fantastic time cruising is noted for.

To be very practical consider that if you look at the damage on September 11, the total number of deaths on the airlines is 288 including crew and militants. I will guarantee you that since September 11 more than 288, expert travel advice , people have, expert travel advice , lost their lives on America's highways. It is estimated that greater than 34,000 will lose their lives traveling, expert travel advice , on the road and if you average that per day, 93 people daily will not make it to their destination via car. Flying is still the safest form of traveling, expert travel advice , .
This writer believes we have an, expert travel advice , obligation to continue the business of life, to live freely and to travel when and where we want within the constraints of common sense. To do other would suggest the terrorists have won.
Rest assured the cruise lines have made major changes in itineraries to place their ships in the safest and most enjoyable, expert travel advice , voyages possible. The Middle East itineraries may be eliminated for the duration but there are fantastic values on hundreds of other itineraries.
If you are concerned, sit down with a cruise expert and discuss your situation face to face to learn why cruising remains a safe, and enjoyable vacation and why now is the time to make your plans.
The good news today is that more people than are enjoying the hassle free way of cruising than ever before - securely!
Talk to your agent about price protection, deposits, penalties or lack of for cancellation and all the little details that will help assure a vacation like none other on earth. See you on board!

Caviar Flights and Borscht on Rails - Adventures in Crossing the Motherland

Author: Mark M Thomson

Source: ezinearticles.com

You're in Moscow on business when your boss tells you he wants you in Kiev by Monday. Quick, what do you do? In the U.S., you'd log on to some travel search engine and find the best flight. The train wouldn't even register as an option. But here in the Former Soviet Union (F.S.U.), the train is usually the first (and often the only) consideration for long-distance travel. Let's take a closer look at both options.

Most major cities in Russia and Ukraine have airports, and most major airlines serve them. In-country air travel is modern and - as expected - relatively inexpensive. Thankfully, even on purely Russian airlines such as Aeroflot, announcements are made in both Russian and English. Equally convenient, all important airport signs are also written in English. The main difference between Western air travel and Russian is the peripheral infrastructure. Don't expect Starbucks. Instead, be thankful if there's a café at all. Bring your own toilet paper (a rule that actually applies to any mode of travel throughout the F.S.U.), and brace yourself for barbaric bathroom conditions.

Step through the gate and civilization returns. Nowadays, passengers on Russian airlines are better fed than their American counterparts who are lucky if they get a packet of pretzels tossed their way. The various Slavic airlines which serve the F.S.U. are reminiscent of the variety of Western budget airlines like Southwest: Professional, reliable, and no-frills. They have comparable safety records, as well. Though you'll probably do most of your long-distance travel in the F.S.U. with the airlines, you shouldn't rule out train travel.

Buying a train ticket is easy enough, even if you speak no Russian. At the ticket counter, say the name of your destination as you hand the lady a slip of paper with the travel date written on it. Just make sure you use the European system: Day then month. It's easy, and tickets, advice europe travel , are cheap. You can cross nearly the entire expanse of Ukraine - the largest country in mainland Europe - for a whopping ten dollars.

But it won't be in style, advice europe travel , . A ten dollar ticket buys you passage via a barracks-style wagon called 'plaskart'. I don't know what the word means, but can only assume it's Russian for "suffering." Winter, advice europe travel , or summer, it's always too hot and too crowded. Although the communal spirit of traveling 'plaskart', advice europe travel , style can be appealing - imagine sharing beer and dried fish with complete strangers - the communal noise and odors quickly take their toll. Traveling in the great cattle wagon of the Russian train system is best experienced vicariously.

That was the ten dollar ticket. For $15 or so, you can go first class. Called, advice europe travel , 'kupe' (pronounced, advice europe travel , 'koo-PEH'), this is a private, four-person sleeping car. Your own bed, your own luggage compartment. There's even a lady who comes to bring you tea. Some trains have an even more exclusive option: Written C.B., it's pronounced 'Ess-Veh' and stands for 'Super Wagon.' A spot in one of these two-person rooms will cost about $35. But no matter how comfortable your personal compartment is, there's, advice europe travel , no hiding from the noise of the train itself. My girlfriend finds the constant clattering relaxing, but as I try to sleep, it sounds like it's Hammer & Anvil Day at, advice europe travel , the metal works next door. My advice: Bring ear-plugs.

Still, traveling by train across the great Motherland is an amazing experience. Make your way to the restaurant car, sit at a table by the window, and enjoy a surprisingly tasty dinner as you watch the countryside roll by. Neither words nor photos can express the marvel of passing the unending fields of sunflowers in the south of Ukraine. Is there that much yellow in all the world?

Depending on the time of year you travel, you'll ask similar questions of other colors. Imagine, for days on end, passing nothing but snow covered fields, advice europe travel , in Siberia. You'll think someone painted all the windows white. Or take a ride through the forests east of the Carpathians at the height of autumn. Trees are ablaze with red and orange. In summer, you might see only green fields and blue skies. Traveling by train across the F, advice europe travel , .S.U. is a visceral experience, not to be simply dismissed for the ease and comfort of air travel.

So let time be the deciding factor. If you're in a hurry, head to the airport. But if your schedule permits, considering crossing the land of Eastern Europe by train. You might lose a day or two, but you'll gain a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Villas in Short Supply for 2004 Maui Vacations

Author: Anonymous

Source: free-articles

Kihei, Maui, Hawaii December 31, 2003--A good economy and minimal housing inventory has made it hard to find a villa to rent for that Maui vacation.

Many of these beach estates now have year-round Hawaii residents living in them, and it will take some advance planning for the vacationer to find a villa for a large or extended family group.

"We are finding vacationers are planning six to 12 months ahead for that big Maui vacation," said, italian travel advice , C. W. Henderson, proprietor of Hale Lele, a luxury villa on Maui's shouth shore.

"Word-of-mouth is our biggest asset, and the article about Hale Lele this past November in American Airlines' American Way magazine has just added to an increase in inquiries, especially from Europe, Canada, and America's West Coast," Henderson said.

Henderson's villa rentals also are boosted by a high traffic Web site at www.DeluxeRental, italian travel advice , .com where potential villa renters can see floor plans, photos, and read about the amenities, including a heated pool with waterfall, Jacuzzi spa, and a unique collection of furnishings, some almost 1,000 years old.

The story of Henderson's villa is legendary in Hawaii.

In 1995, Henderson, a Southern entrepreneur, came upon the perfect spot in Maui for a contemporary Hawaiian villa. The house would be designed by his friend Rod Rodriguez, a New York City designer noted for his, italian travel advice , celebrity clients in Florida, Georgia, New York, Hawaii, and Las Vegas, Nevada. The resulting Hawaiian-styled Pacific Ocean property would eventually come to be known as โ€œHale Lele.โ€

Henderson's, italian travel advice , decision to create a beach mansion on Maui's South Shore (known as the "Gold Coast") near Kihei, led him to purchase a building originally containing six condominium units. Today, the reconfigured four-level 10,000 square foot Hale Lele contains a grand two-level, 5,000 square foot modern Hawaiian villa, plus an additional 5,000 square feet in three separate contemporary two-level Hawaiian living spaces: a guest suite, the owner's unit, and the caretakers' ohana. The home has five kitchens and 15 bathrooms, plus all the bedrooms, laundries, workshops, TV rooms, lanais, and living areas you'd expect--in a style reminiscent of what a Hawaiian king's beach estate might be.

While the incomparable beauty of Hale Lele is the result of the combined creative talents and vision of several men including Rodriguez, Henderson, two Hawaiian architects, and a French-inspired Hawaii landscape designer, Timothy DeShong---it is Hale Lele itself which continues to be the centerpiece of a contemporary Hawaiian design legacy, italian travel advice , . This great, italian travel advice , house is one of the largest private residences on Maui. It is operated as a legal vacation rental and is valued, including its contents, at well over $5,000,000.

Begun in 1984, Hale Lele is constructed of tons of steel and concrete. A noted Hawaiian construction engineer said, "Long after the Maui we know is gone, Hale Lele will remain." Some structural elements were part of the original shipments from Europe and Asia used to construct the nearby Grand Wailea Resort. Fine woods shipped from Canada and the Pacific Northwest joined locally-acquired Hawaiian timber. It took dozens of workers more than five years to complete the remodeling.

During the Christmas Season of 2002, Henderson formally opened the doors of the finished home for the first time to friends, family, and vacation renters. On into the 21st century, Hale Lele will remain a monument to contemporary Hawaiian architecture, showcasing C.W. Henderson's original and extensive collection of unique furnishings, art and antiques.

Henderson, visionary publishing entrepreneur and artificial intelligence pioneer, is a Renaissance man, fluent in the language of business and widely traveled. He is knowledgeable and conversant about architecture, music, outdoor sports, yachting, fishing, agriculture, horticulture and journalism. He grew up in the impoverished Deep South, was a former tobacco farmhand, school basketball player, and Eagle Scout who went on to be voted "Most Likely to Succeed" in his Georgia high school senior class. After turning down a college music scholarship, he earned a University of Georgia journalism degree in 1971. He soon joined TriStar Pictures and became a successful motion picture executive and TV screenwriter, producer and director.

His passion, however, was artificial intelligence-inspired, italian travel advice , journalism, and in 1984, he founded the medical and pharmaceutical publishing giant NewsRx. In addition to CEO, italian travel advice , at NewsRx, Henderson is owner of hospitality company Deluxe Rental, is manager-partner of Pacific Ocean Institute, and is a partner at Learning Lane, an education company which owns learning centers.

Henderson's most admired historical figure was a close personal friend of Franklin, italian travel advice , D. Roosevelt and was American's boldest, most spectacular entrepreneur: Henry J. Kaiser (1882-1967). Like Kaiser, also a former farm boy, Henderson rose from lower-middle-class origins to become a successful entrepreneur living in Hawaii. Kaiser's legacy, including HMO Kaiser-Permanente, a resort in Hawaii, ship-building, real estate development in Honolulu, italian travel advice , and Las Vegas (with partner Howard Hughes), tourism,, italian travel advice , motion pictures, music, and TV productions like Maverick and The Kaiser Aluminum Hour, all parallel Henderson's interest in healthcare, yachting, real estate, tourism, and the entertainment and hospitality industries. In 2003, Henderson carried this admiration a step further: he purchased Henry J. Kaiser's legendary yacht, a 50-foot Wheeler Sport Fisherman, same make and model as the famous Pilar yacht owned by journalist Ernest Hemingway. Henderson's yacht, Henry J, is perhaps the most historical modern boat in Hawaii (post WWII), and certainly the most well-appointed. As Norman Vincent Peale said, "Few people ever did so much for, italian travel advice , Hawaii as Henry Kaiser. He left an indelible mark on the islands." Not surprisingly, Henderson's favorite books are Henry J. Kaiser, Builder of the Modern American West (1989); Henry J. Kaiser, Western Colossus (1991); and Mr. Kaiser Goes to Washington (1997).

Also, like Kaiser's soirees, Henderson's Atlanta penthouse parties are legendary, and were frequented by well-known music industry and motion picture celebrities.

It was in Atlanta that Henderson first met Rodriguez. The celebrity, italian travel advice , designer remodeled a home for Henderson in Atlanta's tony Druid Hills, a national historic district, where the street plantings and parks had been designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, America's most famous landscape architect. It was while traveling to Japan with Rodriguez, during a rest stop in Hawaii, that Henderson discovered, in sunny Maui, the building which would become Hale Lele.

The two men journeyed throughout, italian travel advice , the Southern United States, Hawaii, and Japan, purchasing paintings, hand-carved bowls, sculptures, silk rugs, and furniture during the years Hale Lele was being remodeled. Henderson even journeyed to Hawaii's "forbidden island" of Niihau (with the island's owner, of course) for ideas. Henderson's diverse and cultured tastes are now on display in this great house. His intent--to construct a casual beach estate that he imagined would be built by Hawaiian King Kamehameha the Great if alive today-- produced the huge collection which furnishes Hale Lele. Indeed, it is the nature of the collection, reflecting Henderson's interests and tastes, which guests and visitors find most fascinating.

Inside the house, artworks by famous Hawaiians and Asians adorn the walls and floors, some items dating to the 1100s. Some of Henderson's favorites are by Peggy Hopper, Diana Hansen-Young, Curtis Wilson Cost, and Susan McGovney Hansen. The furniture includes Japanese travel chests, handmade Inuit chairs and tables, and a Flemish Wardrobe from the 1600s, objects like those which filled Captain Cook's quarters as he sailed the Pacific. One bedroom grouping is rumored to have been used by Elvis during the filming of Blue Hawaii, italian travel advice , . An ornate chair had Marilyn Monroe sitting in it when it was at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood... at least, they say so. Hanging above the library you'll find the Tommy Bahama-created Maui bicycle of actor, producer, and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Next to the bicycle is an original Moeller watercolor of Schwarzenegger as champion bodybuilder, italian travel advice , . A giant woven tapestry, formerly part of the $100 million-plus Las Vegas Bellagio Collection, hangs in the living room. Early Hawaiian collectables and vintage art deco furniture from colonial Vietnam also can be found. A dozen Thai silk rugs from Jim Thompson, Thailand's Silk King, cover floors in the villa add-on suite, while fresh flowers from the property's Hawaiian gardens decorate the rooms. A 12th century Buddha occupies a niche on the main floor.

Upstairs on the fourth and top level, in addition to a quiet reading area and a TV-game room, guests can enjoy the "whale watch," comfortably observing the largest creatures of the sea at play in the ocean, which is a mere 60 steps away.

Fully air conditioned, Hale Lele is considered one of the finest residences ever built on Maui. It is admired for its innovative engineering, solid, italian travel advice , construction from concrete and steel, and its exquisite siting which maximizes views of the volcano known as Haleakala, "The Cove," one of Hawaii's premier surfing spots, plus extraordinary sunset and Pacific Ocean views which include the Islands of Lanai, Molokini, Molakai and Kaaholawe.

Henderson wanted his beach home to provide family and friends with life's recreational pleasures: a heated swimming pool with thermae spa waterfall, flat panel big-screen plasma TV room, and the beauty of both sunrise and sunset from extensive lanais, plus protected, connected, direct access to the Pacific oceanโ€ฆ"at the ocean", without the problems and lack of security of lesser, italian travel advice , houses "on the beach", among the hoards of beach-going visitors.

Guests who are lucky enough to occupy Hale Lele as a vacation rental, get to see โ€œbehind-the-scenesโ€ life, italian travel advice , in upscale Hawaii: life at its finest in one of Maui's largest mansions, or as many have described, italian travel advice , it, the Hawaiian version of a great Italian villa.

While Hale Lele, the house, is the focal point of the compound, it is clear when you walk the grounds and visit the lanais that the genius of Rodriguez and DeShong are an integral part of Hale Lele. Their sweeping landscape provides a fitting, italian travel, italian travel advice , advice , backdrop for this magnificent villa. Rare yellow beach-side bamboo grows side by side with Hawaiian plants, with vines and flowers blooming year round. Rodriguez' secret zen garden provides a quiet place to meditate. A DeShong-designed water wall is frequently cited as the most "image setting" aspect of the front grounds. A modern sculptured "Hawaiian waterfall," the water wall is a monument to DeShong's creative landscaping genius. So, too, are the thoughtfully-designed gardens and paths.

In keeping with the Henderson tradition of entertaining in style, today's guests at Hale Lele are treated, not only to the elegance of a 21st century Hawaiian estate, but to the epicurean pleasures of living like Hawaiian royalty. Scarlett DeShong, former spa manager at the luxurious Four Seasons Resort in Wailea, Maui, is available, on-site, to provide epicurean and recreation advice. She is currently the Maui coordinator of Hawaii's state-wide health, recreation, and fitness initiatives. She can tell you where to hike, exercise, "be pampered," or buy great, fresh local foods or locate fine wines for Hale Lele's unique wine "cellar," formerly a Hawaiian canoe turned keeper of award-winning wines. The villa maintains dozens of cases of fine wines, some from Maui's own vineyards and winery.

Rodriguez-inspired touches at Hale Lele include the unique grand entrance stairway, designed in the ancient Hawaiian style: expansive steps at the bottom, gradually narrowing to cozy comfort at the formal entry of the home. Inside, you will find his inviting great stairwell and luxurious two-story open spaces lighted by romantic customized lighting and integrated custom sound systems. Out back, find the unique pool arbor, changing room and spacious and private outdoor "open to the stars" shower.

Across from Hale Lele is an awe-inspiring and private, italian travel advice , beach area where visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll, kids can frolic in the majestic Pacific, or one can sit peacefully with a glass of wine and watch the sun slip quietly into the ocean.

For those looking for even more, there are dozens of recreation, dining and shopping opportunities within walking distance in the charming beach-front town of Kihei, one of Maui's most showcased settlements.

Hale Lele is located in sunny South Maui near the Wailea Resort, at the intersection of the narrow and hidden, italian travel advice , beach-front road known as Iliili and the manicured grass-covered beach-walk called Lele Place (a Maui County beach access).

In Hawaiian, "Hale" is house and "Lele" is leapโ€ฆso "Hale Lele" is "the home at Lele Place," a short jump or leap from the beach. E-mail inquiries to Vacation@DeluxeRental.com or visit www.DeluxeRental.com.

Top 3 Romantic Destinations

Author: Croydon J Hounslow

Venice, Italy - This beautiful city, built on a series of islands in the centre of a huge lagoon, is a classic destination, italian travel advice , for lovers. Famed for its network of canals which make up the main thoroughfares of the town, and for it's distinctive and often crumbling buildings, Venice is a city full of surprises where you could quite happily wander for hours, hopelessly lost, only to find yourself back where you started. My advice would be to abandon all hope of knowing where you are and simply get lost in the winding streets, marvelling at the little treasures of architecture, shopping and food that Venice holds. A slight word of warning - Venice is not a city for party animals; wander the streets after about 9pm and you'll be hard pushed to find anything to do. One for getting up early, making the most of the day and then retiring to a hotel room for the evening!

Alghero, Sardinia - This marvellous little walled town on Sardinia's North Eastern coast was until recently one of the Mediterranean's best kept secrets, but has started to build up an impressive tourist industry in recent years thanks in no small part to the introduction of cheap Ryanair flights into its tiny airport. The old town is beautiful, evoking the perfect laid back Italian spirit, although more recently developed areas of the city leave a little to be desired aesthetically. We found, however, that it was quite possible to spend four days wandering the old town, sitting drinking and nibbling at snacks in one of the many, italian travel advice , piazzas scattered about, eating, italian travel advice , fine seafood and drinking the local wine. 'Il Grotto de Nettune' or Neptune's Cave, a short boat ride away, is also well worth a visit for it's stunning display of stalagmites and stalactites. Alghero is quite the opposite of Venice in that the piazza bars in the old town will stay open seemingly indefinitely into the night, so it can be ideal for those looking for a little more excitement. Go, italian travel advice , earlier in the year to avoid the crowds, as Alghero is sure only to continue growing in popularity as word spreads/

Channel Islands, UK - Golden sand, crystal clear blue ocean and a summer climate that rivals the South of France (most of the time!) and it's all on our doorstep! A forty minute flight out of Stansted or Gatwick or two hours by ferry from Weymouth will get you to Guernsey or Jersey, the two largest islands, and from there you can take hourly ferries to Herm or Sark or a local flight to Alderney. The stunning natural beauty of these islands is complemented by the local pace of life, which some visitors have likened to stepping thirty years into the past. The Channel Islands offer a real variety of experiences for lovers of all ages, with Jersey and Guersey offering, italian travel advice , surfing, dolphin watching, italian travel advice , trips, shopping, nightclubs, while the smaller islands are pure relaxation centres, Sark's Seigneurial Gardens are stunning and rich and Herm, the smallest of the, italian travel advice , islands to be open to the public, is only a mile by a mile and a half (about the size of Hyde Park) and surrounded on three sides by fine golden sand. The variety and laid back attitudes of the islands make them a perfect destination for lovers young and old and are also ideal for those travelling with children,, italian travel advice , who can rest assured that the kids will find plenty to amuse themselves with, leaving the parents free to enjoy some quality romantic time.
